WADDESDON MANOR WEDDING CAKE

THE WADDESDON MANOR
WEDDING CAKE & NICHOLAS FRIEND!

We are simply thrilled to offer our Members an in-person event with Nicholas Friend at the helm- the first meetup since February 2020! For this very special occasion we have chosen a most suitable and unusual destination – a giant, 40’ tall, interactive ‘wedding cake’ by the visionary artist, Joana Vasconcelos at Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire! Part sculpture, part architectural garden folly, the three-tiered ceramic cake is a major Rothschild Foundation commission that celebrates love, festivity and joy!

Entirely swathed in pastel Portuguese ceramics, Wedding Cake, echoes the centuries-old tradition of the garden folly. Recall, if you will, the fake Alfredian castle in the middle of a forest outside Cirencester, Merlin’s cave at Richmond, Gothic arches leading nowhere on the horizon at Rousham, a crystal grotto at Painshill, a Temple of British Worthies, a Temple of Virtue and a Temple of Concord at the Temple family’s Stowe, a Doric column supporting nothing at Chiswick; even a giant habitable pineapple at Dunmore Park. Such follies are designed to delight, amuse and uplift! The Wedding Cake is a stunning addition to Britain’s portfolio of distinguished follies.

An absolutely astonishing ceramic ‘wedding cake’ in soft pastel shades of pink, green and blue, studded with gargoyles, seashells and mermaids, the Wedding Cake is a gorgeous folly into which we are invited, and, may, if we wish, climb to the very top to look out over the verdant grounds of the Rothschilds’ French Renaissance Waddesdon Manor.

Commissioned by the intrepid and cultured Lord Jacob Rothschild (he collected Giacometti and Matisse as a young man), the Waddesdon Wedding Cake has been created over the last five years from 25,000 ceramic tiles by the rule-breaking Joana Vasconselos, a multi-media Portuguese artist.

In what more appropriate building could we Inscapers gather as a celebration of seeing one another face to face for the first time in three and a half years? We do hope to see many loyal Members as well as those who have joined in recent years!

You may join Nicholas for the Day with lunch, private tour and tea, or make a Two-Day event out of it by joining him for the Day, as well as for dinner, bed and breakfast at the lovely Bel and Dragon Inn in Wendover. Full details can be found below.
