CLARE FORD-WILLE

The Via Emilia, completed in 187 BC linking Rimini on the Adriatic coast to Piacenza on the river Po, runs like a straight bright stream through the red-roofed houses of Bologna, Modena and Parma; it soon became the means for massive economic and cultural expansion of the entire region. Clare Ford Wille leads us via many-towered medieval Bologna, alma mater to Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio, to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Romanesque Modena and then to our base, Parma, renowned not only for its legendary cheese and ham but as the home of the gentle prolific master, Correggio.

Beyond Parma, Clare takes us to villages whose names sound like exotic Italian dishes: Fontanellato, Fidenza, Castellarquato (a hill town almost unchanged since the 10c) and Torrechiara, whose count built his mistress her own fantasy castle with the Camera d’Oro (“Golden Chamber”) the most famous erotic chamber in Italy. .

COST £2285 members, £2325 non-members, no single room supplement, £250 deposit, includes flights London-Bologna-London, five nights accommodation, all breakfasts, three dinners with wine, all lectures, all entrance fees, all private minibus travel during the tour, all gratuities, VAT.
