This is a controversial exhibition for its rare inclusion of a discrete collection of the clothes worn by Sargent’s sitters in the 19th century. Some acclaim it for the glories of portraiture as images of confident women dressed in exquisite haute couture textiles of their day; creatures of good fortune to wear such beautiful clothes, each one an individual work of textile art. Others think the inclusion of actual mannequins draped in the clothes worn by the sitters does his paintings an injustice; they are distractions, or worse, concrete evidence of the frivolity, the privilege, perhaps even, the greed, of the moneyed upper classes.
To our eyes, they are portraiture in the hands of a supreme master who painted portraits that we are simply incapable of ignoring – these are portraits of striking individuals as well as of fine and rare clothing. We will be able to see Sargent’s technical achievement using a difficult medium such as oil paint. We see his agile and sensitive brushstroke in depicting both the complexions and expressions of his sitters. We see the same skill repeated in his mastery of the most difficult matters of folds and pleats, texture and finish. Please join us for any or all aspects of this exhibition study day!
